Shipping Container Garage Plans — Ideas, Costs & Building Guide

A shipping container garage is one of the most practical and affordable alternatives to a traditional garage build. Using one or two 40ft containers, you can create a secure, weatherproof garage for vehicles, tools, or a full workshop — often for less than half the cost of a stick-built garage.

Container Garage Configurations

  • Single 40ft container — Fits one vehicle plus storage. Internal width: 7’8″. Best for motorcycles, ATVs, compact cars, or pure workshop use.
  • Two 40ft containers side-by-side — Creates a 16′-wide garage (with the shared wall removed). Fits two cars or one truck plus workspace.
  • Container + lean-to — One container with an attached carport or covered workspace. Combines enclosed storage with open-air access.
  • L-shape or U-shape — Multiple containers arranged for maximum covered area with a central workspace.

What You Need

  1. Foundation — Gravel pad, concrete piers, or railroad ties. Containers do not need a full slab.
  2. Container(s) — 40ft standard or high cube. High cube adds 12″ of headroom.
  3. Roll-up door — 8ft or 10ft wide for vehicle access. We sell containers with pre-installed roll-up doors.
  4. Insulation — Spray foam recommended for climate control. Budget $1-2/sqft.
  5. Electrical — Sub-panel from your main house. Budget $500-$1,500 for a licensed electrician.
